Researchers from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio have found that an estimated 360,937 children under age 5 were treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to these children’s products in the 21 years ending in 2010.

If you do the math, more than 17,000 children on average are injured in this way every year – 2 every minute! In many cases, children haven’t been correctly fastened into the carrier or stroller, and most of the injuries resulted from falls. The study found that brain injuries, concussions and soft tissue damage are the most common injuries. Falls were responsible for the majority of stroller and carrier-related injuries. The typical patient was male and less than one year old.

Unfortunately, the total number of children injured in these types of accidents is probably much higher, as some are seen by a family doctor or not even treated at all.

The good news is that over the 21-year period, the rate of stroller and carrier-related injuries decreased significantly. However, the number is still much too high especially for injuries that are largely preventable.

Here are some safety tips that can help prevent a tragedy for your little one:

• Do some research to pick the best stroller for your baby. Consider your location, stroller style like umbrella or jogging and what accessories you’ll need.
• For newborns, make sure the stroller reclines for neck support. Most umbrella strollers do not recline.
• Look for safety features including brakes that are easy to use and a wide base for stability.
• Returning the warranty card ensures that you’ll be notified of any recalls.
• Never leave your baby unattended in the stroller.
• Avoid placing heavy bags on the handles as they will cause an imbalance.
• Make sure any toys are securely fastened.
• Always buckle the harness and seat belt.
• Apply the brake whenever you stop.
• Be careful folding the stroller and make sure it’s fully open before putting baby in it.

For infant carrier safety:

• Pay attention to the carrier’s weight limits and instructions on facing out or in.

• Never wear your baby in a car or when bicycling.
• Support baby’s weight carefully when bending or reaching in an unusual position.
