Community Involvement
We take great pride in our dedication to our community. Some of our recent contributions include the following:
* (November 2007) Thanksgiving Project to Feed the Hungry in Broward County
Diana Santa Maria, who serves on the Board of Directors of the Broward County Bar and heads the Goodwill Committee, recently contributed to and raised hundreds of dollars among her fellow Board members to feed the hungry in Broward. She along with several other Board members went to the Cooperative Feeding Program in Ft. Lauderdale on the day before Thanksgiving and gave out food vouchers purchased from Publix to needy families in Broward so that they could have a turkey and food for Thanksgiving Day. The Cooperative Feeding Program focuses on addressing the poverty and hunger crisis in Broward County and has served as a model agency in addressing these issues for over 20 years. * (June 2007) Diana Santa Maria was recently appointed to the American Cancer Society of Broward County's Parole Board for their Annual Jail and Bail Event. On June 29th 2007 she volunteered to be a jail bird and raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society. Read more about Jail & Bail.
* (April 2007) After the criminal conviction of a teacher accused of molesting a student in the Broward County Public School system for over a year and a half ( see our Recent News and Publications Link or go to : www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-cteacher05apr05,0,6234335.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines ), Diana, who is presently handling the civil lawsuit against the School Board, hopes that this will bring greater awareness by the Broward County School Board and heightened standards in their hiring practices of teachers as well as in their responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment to their students.
* (February 2007) Diana recently addressed lawyers at the American Association for Justice Winter Convention on the topic of "Handling Connective Tissue Disorder Cases", this was a joint presentation together with a local prominent neurologist. She also authored and spoke to lawyers attending the Florida Justice Association annual "Workhorse Seminar" on the topic of "The Defense Exam and Plaintiff's Pre-existing Conditions and Injuries-Strategies, Tactics and Techniques to Debunk Defense Positions and Strategies"
* This firm served as Corporate Sponsor for the Annual Men of St. Mark Golf Classic, held at the Country Club of Miami. The proceeds of which were used for furthering the educational and building goals of St. Mark's Catholic School in Cooper City, Florida. The huge turn out for this event was phenomenal and a good time was had by all in attendance.;
* This firm has supported Covenant House Florida in order to help disadvantaged children ; we believe that children are our future and that all should be given a chance;
* This firm has sponsored the Leukemia Society of America's (Leukemia Society of America, http://www.leukemia.org/)"Team in Training" in the hopes that a cure will one day be found for this debilitating disease;
* The Firm is a long-time contributor and active participant in the Florida Lawyers Action Group and a Patron for Endowment for Academic Giving to Law and Education (EAGLE) an arm of the Florida Association for Justice;
* Diana is a long time member (1996-2006) of the Board of Directors for the Florida Justice Association as well as being a long time member andsupporter of theFlorida Justice Association's Women's Caucus.
* This firm has served as coporate sponsor for the Annual Golf Tournament of St. Jerome Catholic Church and School in Broward.
* This firm supports the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County with the hope that every child will find proper guidance and a loving heart.
* Diana continues to be an active member of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association;
* This firm consistently supports the Voices For Children of Miami-Dade County the mission of which is to raise funds to ensure that every abused and neglected child in Miami-Dade County has a court-appointed Guardian Ad Litem volunteer and that financial assistance and other resources are available for their accompanying health, educational and social needs.
* (Fall of 2005) This firm provided financial and legal support to the victims of the Katrina Hurricane disaster in New Orleans; soon thereafter this firm, itself, became a victim of the ravages of Hurricane Wilma which struck and devastated our offices on October 24, 2005. We were immediately evacuated and continued our practice in temporary space until we moved into our permanent new offices in July of 2006.
* (2004) As part of her commitment to the legal profession, Diana was appointed by the Florida Bar and serves on the Florida Bar's Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism which aspires to to elevate the standard of professionalism for lawyers throughout the state;
* (June 2004) Diana was recommended by the Florida Bar and appointed by the Governor of the State of Florida to the 'Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission', Florida Judicial Nominating Commission Members a nonpaying position of service to the state of Florida in helping to ensure that the Justices of the Florida Supreme Court and other statewide legal positions of great importance are comprised of persons with the highest standards of character and ethics as well as legal ability;
* (2002-December) Diana Santa Maria appearing in the Miami Herald's "New Year's Resolution of South Florida Professionals" featuring the next year's resolutions of prominent professionals; is quoted to have among her personal resolutions for the coming year,"the continued improvement of the image of trial lawyers as champions of the general public";
* (2000-2004) As part of her commitment to serving the public interest, Diana was twice appointed (by the Florida Bar President) and served as the lawyer representative on the "Citizens Forum" Committee of the Florida Bar, comprised of non-lawyer citizens throughout the state committed to raising the standards of excellence for lawyers in Florida;
* (2001) Post 911 Efforts After the 911 disaster and through our contribution to the ATLA 9-11 Heroes Fund, this office, among many other lawyers and law offices nationwide, attempted to help those families that were affected by the tragic events of September 11;
* Diana has actively supported and in the past served as a member of the Board of Directors for ASPIRA of Florida, Inc. and Chair for ASPIRA of Broward County, a nonprofit community based youth organization dedicated to the leadership and educational development of minority youth;
